Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise encouraged her passion for the arts and her creative side. Her aunt worked the night shift as a nurse to ensure she could pursue her love for theater and art during the day. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay learned by example that art could be an avenue for action. DuVernay was strongly influenced by her summers in Selma and decided to make the documentary of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. In the year 1990 she was a graduate of Saint Joseph High school in Lakewood California. DuVernay developed an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. She began her career as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to look over the rubbish inside the house that belonged to a member of jury. The duties she was required to complete left her unhappy which is why, when she decided not to pursue a career in journalism, she shifted to the field of public relations. DuVernay was immediately hired after graduating from college as an assistant publicist in an unassuming studio. She started The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. In addition to PR, the company developed several lifestyle websites such as Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
